Working Process Sewage Treatment Plant.

A Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) is a facility designed to clean and process sewage.

Sewage treatment involves removing contaminants from wastewater, typically originating from households, through physical, chemical, and biological processes to produce safe, treated water. Initially, the wastewater flows through screens and into settlement basins to remove trash and debris, which can otherwise cause significant damage and excessive wear to the equipment, thereby reducing its lifespan. This process ensures that the treated wastewater is free from harmful bacteria, viruses, and other contaminants. Here are some key points to know about STPs.

Primary treatment.

  • Primary treatment involves combining raw and processed sewage to create a homogeneous solution.
  • The mixture is aerated with oxygen to break down organic matter and eliminate pathogens. The balancing tank is designed to manage six to eight hours of sewage.
  • A blending system is commonly used to ensure the wastewater remains homogeneous and free from microbial growth.
  • In addition, an aeration plant must include a filtration system.

Secondary treatment.

  • Secondary treatment typically involves an aerobic process, utilizing aeration basins equipped with aerators.
  • These systems consist of pipes with attached discs made of thin rubber or ceramic membranes that allow air to pass through.
  • Air flowing through these systems creates bubbles in the water column.
  • Oxygen in the water aids bacteria in digesting the organic matter in the wastewater. This process eliminates most harmful chemicals, although it does not remove nitrates or chlorides.
